Message from the RCFL Director
Since the early 1980's, computers have undergone a dramatic change. All this has led to innovation which touches every aspect of our lives. A plethora of new software, smaller size and increased hard drive capacity. Home computers now have the storage capacity of up to 1 Terabyte which was once reserved for business. In line with the storage capacity, you have an inordinate amount of devices which can store information to include: iPods, Thumb drives, Xboxes, Play Stations and Wiis to name a few.
Unfortunately, not all these innovations have been put to good use. Some in our society have used these advances for illegitimate schemes. This is where the CGRCFL plays a vital role in extracting evidence from all types of media to include cell phones. The CGRCFL also has the capability to process audio and video evidence.
The CGRCFL is now moving into its eighth year since opening its doors in March 2003. More now than ever law enforcement agencies are relying on our assistance in the processing of digital media. When a search warrant is executed on a home or a business, almost all have a computer or some form of storage media which may need to be processed for possible evidence.
The CGRCFL is a collective body of all law enforcement agencies bound by the common goal of ensuring any person or company which engages in wrongdoing by using a computer is brought to justice to ensure future acts do not occur. It is important to recognize the CGRCFL's successes were not achieved alone but in close partnership with our participating agencies whose support is essential to our ongoing operations.
It is vital we have sufficient staff to handle the increased demand for forensic services. Participating agencies provide personnel who manage and operate the CGRCFL We are continually pursuing an assortment of technological initiatives to increase our efficiency and productivity. Technology alone will not solve all the challenges which lie ahead. A highly trained work force will.
Numerous law enforcement personnel have been trained by the CGRCFL in the use of software tools which will aide in their investigations. As always the CGRCFL is looking to bring on additional agencies so we can train their personnel in the science of forensic examination. While a two-year commitment by the participating agency is required, the benefits of the training received will far out weigh the time initially invested.
I encourage those law enforcement agencies operating in our service area to utilize our expertise and join us by becoming a part of the CGRCFL team. The Website contains all the information you need to get started. Anyone in the Chicago law enforcement community who wishes to speak with me directly about becoming a participating agency can contact me at (312) 913-9270.
